The day was New Year's Eve, 2008. I was bored- very bored. I didn't want to spend yet another New Year's watching that stupid ball drop on TV. I didn't know what else to do though. Then, I remembered that some people often go to celebratory events known as "parties" during times like New Year's. So I started calling people to see where I could find one of these things. I called a dozen people and found nothing. Then, I called my friend, Brittany. She said that there was a a party at her house and that I could come if I wanted. I was extremely excited. Maybe that was my mistake... someone like me who's especially prone to disaster should have learned not to get their hopes up so quickly. Brittany lives in Mt. Airy. I got directions and hopped on the bus at about 11.00. It took me about an hour to get to the corner that's two blocks from her house. On the frigid walk on the way to Brittany's house, I thought about the extreme "partying" that I'd be doing in a few minutes. I thought there would be lots of loud music (you know, the angry kind of music that us teenagers listen to). Anyway, my hopes were near critical mass when I knocked on the door. I should have suspected something when I saw how quiet the house was from outside. Not to mention that the lights had more of a wholesome, warm flicker to them. Brittany answered the door. She said "Hi" and welcomed me inside.
When I went in, I didn't see a party. There wasn't even any music.
There was only Brittany's family, having a warm, innocent dinner at their dining room table. (At this point, I'd like to mention that I was wearing a glow stick necklace to add to the effect of my look.) What I expected to be a wild, New Years party was actually someone's family dinner. I would have run out the door. Over the years I have learned that the best way to avoid awkward situations is to simply, and immediately, run away. This was not an option, as it was the dead of winter and I was already almost dead from the cold.
There's no graceful way to write this. There's no way to make this sound un-awkward.
I went in and met each one of Brittany's family members one by one for the first time. I ended up hanging out with Brittany in her kitchen because I was on the verge of projectile vomiting. Eventually, I left. Happy New Years, Alex.

The Melting Pot
It was a blustery Saturday 14th (important detail). It was the day of Kaloni's birthday party. It was to be held at a restaurant where Kaloni had made reservations, The Melting Pot, a restaurant that specialized in fondue. I'd heard nothing but good things. The plan was for me to wake up early that day, go to Old Navy to buy Kaloni's present, and then pop over to Chestnut Hill(which is an hour from my house in the northeast) for Kaloni's party. Unfortunately, my irresponsibility caused me to wake up at 1:15 pm. Exactly fifteen minutes before the party was to begin. I panicked. You know when you wake up and you're not quite late, but have just enough time to do nothing? That's what happened. I didn't even know the exact address of the place. But somehow, through the magic of 411 and MapQuest, I got there. Although I was over two hours late. I walked in. I went up to the reservations desk and told her that i was here for the party. The following dialogue should make the events that followed more clear:
Me: Hi. I'm here for my friend's birthday party.
Lady: Um..Okay. What's your friend's name?
Me: Alex, no wait. I mean Kaloni.
The woman looks through her computer
Lady: I don't see anyone by that name.
I was already a little on edge because of my extreme lateness and inability to procure a present, so I was definitely not in the mood for tomfoolery
Me: >sighs in frustration< Are you sure?
Lady: Y-yes, I'm sure. Are you certain you have the right da-
Me: You know what? I'll just call her!
Lady: I could get my manager if you wa-
Me: Yes, I would very much like that.
Kaloni picks up her phone before the woman leaves to get her manager
Kaloni: Hello?
Me: Hey Kaloni! I'm here, sorry I'm so late.
Kaloni: Alex, what are you talking about? The party isn't until the 22nd!
The look on my face almost gave it away. I looked around and realized what a scene I'd made. Everyone was staring.
It was all I could do to get the words out:
Me: I have the wrong date.
I power-walked right outta that place without looking anyone in the eye. I was, to say the least, extremely embarrassed. I couldn't even make eye contact with the cashier at the Mcdonalds I went to later to eat my troubles away.
